The NKBA Design Challenge is open to students each year. The competitors follow a set program and house plan, and create a new kitchen design remodel based on the fictitious clients' wishes.

Objective: The envisioned clients are moving into their beach house in Cannon Beach, Oregon to live full-time with their two Golden Retrievers. They want a remodeled kitchen that will match the modern style of the rest of the house and that incorporates the natural elements of the Oregon coastline.

Concept: The design concept is functional and allows for entertainment. There is ample space and easy-to-reach storage so that they may age-in-place. The kitchen takes advantage of the existing large windows to maximize their view of the beautiful coastline. The wall separating the kitchen from the dining room was removed to provide for a more spacious and open-concept plan. Pale wood hardwood floors carry throughout the house to provide a seamless transition to the kitchen.

Design Features: A spacious island provides additional counter and storage space and seating for guests. The cabinetry throughout the kitchen is a contemporary style that shows the beautiful natural wood grain to reflect the surrounding forest of the Pacific Northwest. The island color is Driftwood to capture the essence of the rocky coast and the quartz backsplash has a design to replicate the rolling ocean waters.
